I’m hooked on Pinterest – this isn’t going to be the last time I say this but the site is awesome. I added the “Pin It” button to my toolbar and now as I’m cruising the internet I’m pinning stuff, repinning other people and liking what everyone else is up to. One pin that I came across today was of Elisa Strozyk’s work – wooden textiles, they’re so cool.
The textiles are half wooden shapes and half fabric. Basically she’s made wood into a fabric that is able to be manipulated more than its normal, hard appearance.
It’s just so beautiful the way it folds differently, it’s like snowflakes and tessellations.
Close up – I’m not sure what kind of wood it is – or if it’s many, but the slivers are very thin but still have their hard tactile quality.
She dyes them too, which is great. Elisa is just two years older than me – I feel like an underachiever. She was born in Berlin, studied textile and surface design at KHB Berlin and then got a masters in future textile design from Central Saint Martins in London.
In addition to the wooden textiles, Elisa also creates lighting like the above, which she calls accordion lamps. She also took her “normal” wooden textile and made lighting out of it as well.
How unbelievable does that material look as a lamp?
I wonder if she bleached this wood before assembly and what sort of transparent fabric it’s set on. The lamp itself is called, Miss Maple, and can be transformed with touch apparently in mid-air.
This is part of the series she calls Paperweaves, it looks like part tissue paper (the cloud-like parts) and then part traditional thread weaving amidst the paper. The effect is phenomenal.
Beautiful, I love the monochrome look.
